3 injured in crash on Santa Fe Drive near Merced

Three people were injured Monday in a two-vehicle collision on Santa Fe Drive, just outside Merced, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Thomas Porter, 64, of Merced, lost consciousness and was rushed to a regional hospital. Johnel Maryland, 85, of Atwater, suffered unspecified major injuries and Delores Maryland suffered minor injuries. All three were taken to regional hospitals for treatment, Officer Moises Onsurez said.

The collision was reported around 1 p.m. on Santa Fe Drive in front of the Richwood Meat Co., the CHP said.

Officers said Johnel Maryland was driving east in a 2003 maroon Toyota Camry when a tan 2003 GMC Sonoma, driven by Porter, pulled out of the meat company parking lot directly into the path of the Camry, the CHP said.

The driver of the Camry was unable to avoid the collision and struck the left side of the Sonoma, causing major damage to both vehicles, the CHP reported.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation Monday afternoon, officers said.
