Vehicle crashes into power pole in Delhi

Schendel Road in Delhi was closed for more than one hour Friday after a Delhi man swerved to avoid striking a dog and crashed into a utility pole, west of Merced Avenue, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Evan Cardenas, 20, was not injured and neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the crash, Officer Moises Onsurez said.

Cardenas was heading east at 3:39 p.m. in a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu on Schendel Road and was unable to avoid hitting a dog in the road. He lost control of the vehicle after the collision, struck a tree and continued on into the utility pole, the CHP said.

The power pole remained standing, but several live wires were downed, forcing the road closure.
