Merced police opened fire early Saturday on a man they said may have been trying to sneak up on an officer while armed with a gun.

There were no injuries. The man dropped the gun and ran away, Merced police said in a brief news release.

The incident was reported at 12:48 a.m. at a party in the 1100 block of Crescent Drive.

Police said a man with a gun was seen approaching a patrol vehicle with an officer seated inside. Another police officer spotted the man and ordered him to drop the weapon.

Police said the officer fired one round, missing the man, who then dropped the gun and ran.

The name of the officer who opened fire was not released.

The following day, Merced detectives and the Gang Violence Suppression Unit “developed information” alleging that 18-year-old Kamare Bailey was the armed man who approached the officer.

Bailey was arrested inside a home in the 1500 block of East 26th Street. Police also found a stolen .40-caliber handgun and a 9 mm handgun, along with ammunition.

Bailey was arrested and booked at Merced County jail on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, receiving stolen property, brandishing a firearm and gang enhancements. He was still in custody Sunday.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding this incident to call 209-385-4706, or the Merced Police Department Tipster Line at 209-385-4725. The public can anonymously text tips to the Police Department by dialing 847411 and including the word “ComVIP” as the keyword in the message.
