Meth, marijuana seized in traffic stop

A bicycle traffic stop ended Sunday in Merced with officers seizing methamphetamine and marijuana, the Police Department reported.

Angel Zapien III, 37, was cited and released after the traffic stop. Zapien ran a stop sign on his bicycle at West 18th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

“During the traffic stop, officers discovered that Zapien had an active misdemeanor warrant for being drunk in public and resisting a peace officer,” police said in a news release.

Officers searched Zapien and found 273 grams of marijuana and one gram of methamphetamine, according to police.

Zapien was released with a citation to appear in court on the warrant and drug violations.

Merced Police investigators are asking citizens for any information about Zapien. Anyone with information can call Detective Sgt. Curt Gorman at 209 385-4702 or the Police Department tip line at 209 385-4725. Callers can remain anonymous.
