Atwater police seek source of bullet fired from car

Atwater police are asking for the public’s help identifying the people responsible for opening fire from a vehicle Monday night.

Nobody was injured when shots were fired around 8 p.m. Monday near Buhach Road and Juniper Avenue. Police said a 32-year-old Turlock man was traveling north on Buhach when he spotted an older-model Ford Crown Victoria pull up next to him, Lt. Samuel Joseph told the Sun-Star.

The victim’s name was not released for safety reasons. Police believe he is a former gang member who hasn’t been active in gangs for several years, Joseph said.

Police said a man in the Ford made a gang-related remark and at least one shot was fired from the back seat. Witnesses told police between one and seven shots were fired, but officers found only one shell casing.

The bullet struck the driver’s-side rear window and lodged in a headrest.

Police said the driver of the Ford was described as a Latino male wearing a black beanie-style cap.

Anyone with information can contact the Atwater Police Department at 209-357-6396.
