Delhi man arrested in shooting death
A man suspected of shooting another man late Friday in Delhi and who was described as “a known gang member” was arrested on suspicion of murder, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office said.
A second victim, a woman, was also shot during the attack. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Detective Sgt. Chuck Hale said.
The suspect, Juan Carlos Gonzalez, 25, has been arrested on suspicion of murder, Hale said.
He was booked at Merced County jail without bail.
“We are continuing to follow up on leads and gather evidence, and have not ruled out the possibility of making more arrests,” Hale said.
Deputies were called just after 11 p.m. to the 15000 block of Shell Street in Delhi. They found two people suffering from gunshot wounds, investigators said.
“I’m not going to comment on a motive at this time, but I can say this case does have gang overtones,” Hale said.
The male victim, believed to be in his 30s, was flown to a regional hospital where he later died. The woman was taken to another hospital, according to detectives.
Their names have not been released.
Hale declined to comment further on the nature of the injuries. He also declined to comment on the firearm used in the attack or say whether investigators have recovered it.
Deputies with the SWAT team searched a home in the 6800 block of Hinton Avenue and arrested Gonzalez.
The death marks the second homicide of the year in Merced County and the first within the jurisdiction of the Sheriff’s Office.
