Convicted felon arrested with firearm in Merced, police say

A 38-year-old convicted felon from Merced was arrested Thursday by city gang investigators on weapons allegations, the Merced Police Department said in a news release.

Cornell Brown was booked into the Merced County jail on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, the statement said.

Investigators from the Gang Violence Suppression Unit developed information that Brown had firearms at his home in the 1800 block of Calimyrna Avenue.

“Upon serving the search warrant, (gang unit) officers located a .45-caliber handgun and ammunition inside his residence,” police said. “He admitted that the firearm belonged to him.”

Merced police are asking anyone with information in this case to contact Sgt. Brian Rodriguez at 209-385-4710 or the Merced Police Department Tipster Line at 209-85-4725.
