Atwater High School was placed on lockdown for about eight minutes Tuesday afternoon while police chased an unidentified man through the area, the Police Department reported.

Police from Stockton were in Atwater searching for a parolee. The school was locked down as a security precaution around 1:30 p.m. when police chased the man through the staff parking lot, Atwater Lt. Samuel Joseph told the Sun-Star.

The suspect, whose name was not released, was captured a short time later in the 3200 block of Virginia Street. He tried to run from police, scaled a fence but was arrested near the school, police said.

Details about the suspect could not be confirmed.

Joseph said Atwater students were never in any danger and the lockdown was precautionary.
