Atwater man shot in gang attack, police say

A 20-year-old Atwater man was shot in the back late Saturday, the Police Department reported.

The victim, Abraham Tucker, is expected to survive, Lt. Samuel Joseph said.

Tucker was shot around 11:45 p.m. outside a home at the Camelia Mobile Home Park, 2355 Atwater Blvd. He told police he was shot while running on the grass near his apartment. Investigators said he refused to cooperate with police and did not answer other questions.

He was taken to a Modesto hospital for treatment.

No arrests have been made.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remained unclear Sunday, but officers said they believe the incident was gang-related.

Police declined to comment on any potential suspects.

That area of Atwater has been known for violence and other gang-related issues. “It’s been a problem, particularly at that address,” Joseph said.

In May last year, Tucker’s older brother, Matthew Tucker, 22, was shot to death. The death of Matthew Tucker remains an unsolved gang-related homicide, Joseph said Sunday.

“That case is still under investigation,” Joseph said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Atwater police detectives at 209-357-6394. Tips are confidential and callers can remain anonymous.
