DUI suspected in 2-car crash

A 29-year-old man was arrested Sunday morning on suspicion of DUI after a two-vehicle crash in Merced, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The crash was reported just after 11 a.m. on East North Bear Creek Drive at Forist Lane, according to Officer Moises Onsurez.

Federico Gonzales, 29, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche east on North Bear Creek Drive at about 35 to 45 mph. Meanwhile, Eva Garcia, 63, was driving a Honda west on the same road. Gonzales’ vehicle drifted into the westbound lane of traffic and hit the Honda.

Garcia sustained a broken ankle and was taken to Mercy Medical Center.

CHP investigators determined Gonzales had been driving while intoxicated. He was taken to Mercy Medical Center for a medical review and then booked into Merced County jail on suspicion of felony DUI.
