Gang member arrested in Monday shooting in Los Banos
A Los Banos man was arrested Thursday morning on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with a shooting on Quail Street on Monday.
Varnell McFadden, a 26-year-old known gang member on parole, is being held without bail at the Los Banos Police Department Jail, Cmdr. Ray Reyna said.
Police believe McFadden to be a shooting suspect who fired several rounds at two 21-year-old men Monday night. The victims weren’t hurt in the incident.
Police received a call of a shooting at 10:20 p.m. Monday at the 1400 block of Quail Street.
The two victims said they were involved in a confrontation with a man that turned physical, police said.
Reyna said McFadden fled in a dark-colored sedan, and the victims attempted to give chase in their vehicle.
The suspect’s vehicle turned around, and as the cars passed each other, the suspect fired several shots at the victims, police said.
Officers located several shell casings in the roadway as they processed the crime scene.
Reyna said officers identified the suspect as McFadden and served a search warrant shortly after 9:30 a.m. Thursday at a home in the 700 block of Westminster Way. He was taken into custody without incident.
In addition to suspicion of attempted murder, McFadden was booked for violation of parole conditions. According to Merced Superior Court records, McFadden previously was convicted of robbery.
