This year’s Academic Pentathlon winners accepted their awards Thursday during a ceremony at Golden Valley High School, the Merced County Office of Education reported.

The overall winning teams by grade level were: sixth grade, Westside Union Elementary School in Los Banos; seventh grade, Livingston Middle School in Livingston; and eighth grade, Bellevue Elementary School in Atwater.

More than 330 students competed at the three grade levels March 7 at Golden Valley High.

This year’s Super Quiz theme was “Earth Science.” The categories differed by grade level: sixth grade (plate tectonics, Earth’s structure and shaping Earth’s surface); seventh grade (Earth and life history, including evolution); and eighth grade (Earth in the solar system).

Teams competed in five tests to demonstrate their knowledge in literature, math, science, social science and the Super Quiz.

Each team was comprised of nine members, three from each division – Honor, Scholastic and Varsity students. The team competition is designed to give students the opportunity to develop skills working with students of different ability levels, motivation and interests.
