A group of Merced High art students displayed a year’s worth of work last week for a small-scale exhibit at the school. The five students produced a total of 120 art pieces in the form of drawings and paintings.

Art teacher Sarah Hill-Gremillion explained that each of the students was responsible for creating 24 pieces during the school year as part of the Advance Placement curriculum. Toward the end of the school year, students submit their work to the College Board, and with a passing score the students can receive college credit.

The class is composed of junior and senior students: Kryzl Calos, Ia Yang, Xu Lee, Kayla Freitas and Alexis Sanchez.

“I was blown away with how well they did,” said Hill-Gremillion. “It takes real quality to pass (the AP exam).” The AP art show at Merced High takes place every year, she said.

The students’ works will be on display again at the Merced Mall on May 15 and 16, along with the work of art students from other local high schools. Art students from Livingston High, Golden Valley, Buhach and El Capitan also will participate. A total of 1,000 pieces are expected to be showcased.
