Rivera Elementary will have a new principal for the upcoming year, according to officials from the Merced City School District.

David Garza, who was the assistant principal at Rivera Middle School, will move over to the top spot for Rivera Elementary, the district announced in a Facebook post. He takes over from Catherine Puckett, who retired at the end of the school year.

Garza was hired by the Merced City School District in July of 2014 as the assistant principal after nine years with Merced High School, according to spokesperson Sara Sandrik.

"Mr. Garza has done an outstanding job as assistant principal at Rivera Middle School, and we are excited that he will now be bringing his experience and enthusiasm right next door to Rivera Elementary.” Superintendent RoseMary Parga Duran said in a statement.

He'll make $124,014 annually plus benefits, according to the district. The district's board of trustees approved his contract on June 26.

The district is also looking to hire two assistant principal/learning director positions, according to a news release.
