Planada school board seeks public opinion on changing name of middle school
School officials in Planada are seeking the community’s input on whether to change the name of Cesar E. Chavez Middle School.
After allegations against the late farmworker rights leader came to light in March, several Central Valley cities have weighed changing the name of institutions that honor Chavez.
Two days after the New York Times article the revealed the allegations against Chavez, including sexual abuse of minors and rape, Planada Elementary School District Superintendent José L. González said discussions about changing the name of Cesar E. Chavez Middle School would take place.
Now the community can weigh in.
The Planada Elementary School District Board of Trustees has created a survey to get the public’s input.
Links to the survey can be found at the Planada Elementary School District’s Facebook page.
The survey is just three items:
- What is your connection to the district?
- Do you believe the Board of Trustees should consider changing the name of Cesar E. Chavez Middle School?
- Please share additional thoughts or comments.
This survey is anonymous, according to the link. There is no timetable or deadline mentioned on the poll or on the Facebook post.
