Thousands of people are expected to visit UC Merced Saturday to get a peek at what the university has to offer.

Bobcat Day is about six hours of workshops, tours and mingling for current, past and prospective students. Registration starts at 9 a.m. near the center of the 5200 North Lake Road campus.

“While it is directed toward admitted students, other prospective students and community members are welcome as well,” UC Merced spokeswoman Brenda Ortiz said in an email.

The university is expecting about 900 students who have been admitted. Together with those students’ families and guests, the university could see up to 4,000 visitors.

Guided tours of the campus are planned throughout the day. University staff and others will answer questions about majors, research and internship opportunities, housing, financial aid and athletics.

The grassy quad in front of the university library will be home to campus clubs and organizations for much of the day, according to the schedule of events.

Clubs often trot out their best tricks to ramp up interest. For example, engineering students often use their science knowledge to make ice cream for visitors.

Entertainment is also planned on the quad.

UC Merced is celebrating its 10th year and its enrollment expansion from fewer than 900 students to more than 6,000. Alumni plan a reunion.

A list of all of the day’s events is available at admissions.ucmerced.edu/bobcat-day.

Going on at the same time on campus is “The World Upside Down” conference, with discussion panels and a musical planned. The free UC Merced Center for the Humanities conference kicks off at 8 a.m. in the campus’ California Room, inside the library.

Still another sight to see at UC Merced is the Bobcat Art Show, which highlights work by student artists. The gallery, found in the Social Sciences and Management Building, is open special hours Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., because of Bobcat Day.

Parking for Bobcat Day is free as long as guests use Lake Lots 1 and 2, which are south of the university’s main entrance.
