The University of California had 28 employees who made more than $1 million last year, an elite group comprised of athletic coaches, doctors and hospital chief executives.

At UC Merced, the newest campus in the system, administrators are the highest paid. The university system on Tuesday made public a database containing detailed payroll information for employees.

UC Merced’s top earners are Chancellor Dorothy Leland ($342,166), Provost Thomas Peterson ($306,210), Vice Chancellor for Planning and Budget Daniel Feitelberg ($283,962), Director of the Sierra Nevada Research Institute Roger Bales ($262,478) and Dean of the School of Natural Sciences Juan Meza ($253,024).

The records show the best-paid UC employee was Jim Mora, head football coach at UCLA. Mora’s total compensation was $3.5 million, with all but $300,000 coming in bonuses and performance incentives.

UCLA head basketball coach Steve Alford came in second, earning $2.7 million.

Dr. Khalil Tabsh, a specialist in maternal fetal medicine and obstetrics at UCLA, was next at $2.3 million, the vast majority of it earned through research contracts and grants.

The report says the university system competes in many labor markets for personnel and must follow market practices as closely as possible.

Merced Sun-Star staff contributed to this report.
