UC Merced announced Wednesday that it has received a $1 million grant to support its postdoctoral fellowships and expand research in the natural sciences.

UC Merced is one of 30 leading research universities nationwide to receive the grant, which came from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, according to a news release on its website.

“(This) generous gift will help UC Merced attract and retain outstanding early-career scientists, strengthen the mentoring culture across our research community, and advance the boundaries of discovery in key disciplines,” said Hrant Hratchian, UC Merced’s vice provost and dean of graduate education.

The money from the grant will help improve its postdoctoral program and increase the number of postdoctoral scholars on campus by between five and eight, the news release said.
