UC Merced hosting 5K run/walk on campus. What makes this event special
Long-distance runners will be taking the streets in Modesto this weekend for the Modesto Marathon.
For those wanting to run a shorter distance, there is a 5-kilometer run/walk on Saturday at UC Merced.
The annual Toloma 5K, which celebrates Native heritage, is put on by UC Merced’s Division of Equity, Justice, and Inclusive Excellence. “Toloma” means bobcat in the Miwuk language, according to a UC Merced news release.
The run/walk begins at 8 a.m. at the UC Merced practice field next to the soccer field. Check-in, bib pickup and race-day registration will run from 7 to 8 a.m.
Free parking will be available in the Bellevue Lot, and strollers are welcome, the news release said.
A vendor fair will also take place, featuring local businesses, artists and community organizations, including Native craft, jewelry and art vendors.
The Toloma 5K is open to students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members of all experience levels. It is non-competitive; participants may run, jog or walk at their own pace. Pets are welcome as long as they are leashed.
Registration costs $25 in advance and $30 on race day. Children 5 and younger are free.
Registration is available at nativematters.ucmerced.edu/toloma-5k. Questions can be emailed to ejie@ucmerced.edu.
