UC Merced student charged with library burglary

A UC Merced student was arrested in connection with a Dec. 9 burglary at the campus library.

Axel Holman, a second-year student from San Francisco, was arrested at his Merced home Friday by campus police, said UC Merced spokeswoman Brenda Ortiz. He was booked into Merced County Jail on charges of burglary and vandalism. He posted bail early Saturday morning, Ortiz said.

Officers suspect others were involved in the burglary, and the investigation is ongoing, Ortiz said.

The library burglary occurred in the early-morning hours of Dec. 9. Police said the theft resulted in about $50,000 in damage and stolen property. The thieves broke into a door on the east side of the building and proceeded to pry open several other doors as they went into the campus bookstore and a computer room, stealing iPods, 25 laptops and other items. Upon their arrival, police reported seeing two people fleeing the scene.

The burglary was the first major theft in the history of the 6-year-old campus.
