Tourist rescued from Hawaii waterfall trail after jump from rope swing, officials say
A 53-year-old tourist jumped from a rope swing and got stuck on a popular waterfall trail, Hawaii officials said.
The woman visiting from Utah started a hike Tuesday, Feb. 8, on the Ho‘opi‘i Falls in Kapa‘a, the Kaua’i Fire Department said.
The 2.4-mile out-and-back trail is considered a moderate hike and passes a waterfall.
The woman was hiking the trail when she jumped from a rope swing and hurt her legs, the fire department said. The woman couldn’t walk out of the trail on her own, so she called for help.
Rescuers responded and helped the woman off the trail, the fire department said.
“The hiker was later loaded into the stokes litter and wheel and moved to the center of the (stream), where she was extracted via AIR 1 and transported to a landing zone,” firefighters said in a news release.
The woman was then taken to an emergency room.
The fire department did not disclose the woman’s name or specific injuries.
