Semi-truck plows into school bus, sending 5 students to hospital, Florida troopers say
Five students wound up in a hospital, two with serious injuries, after a semi-truck collided with their school bus in northern Florida, state troopers say.
The crash occurred Wednesday, March 30, as both vehicles traveled northbound on U.S. Highway 19 in Levy County, according to Florida Highway Patrol. The school bus, which was in front of the semi, stopped to let off a student when it was rear-ended.
The bus was carrying 10 students and had its flashing red lights activated, troopers said.
“For unknown reasons,” the tractor trailer driver failed to stop “before the right side of the truck and the front side of the trailer” rammed the back of the school bus, according to a crash report.
Five students were taken to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, troopers said. The bus driver also suffered minor injuries, WTSP reported, while the driver of the semi-truck wasn’t hurt.
Authorities have not announced charges but said the incident remains under investigation.
