A San Diego Harbor Police officer checking on a man who asked for help on a call box in the lobby found him sitting in a car in the parking lot, officials told news outlets.

Then the 29-year-old man pointed a handgun at the officer, who ducked behind a column and radioed for help in the confrontation at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 10, police told KSWB.

Other officers responded and three officers opened fire when the man continued to brandish the handgun, police told KGTV. He was hospitalized in critical condition.

“We’re still trying to determine what brought him to Harbor Police,” Capt. Rich Freedman told KFMB.

Police ask that anyone with information call 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
