Deer flies through both windshields in crash that killed driver, New Jersey cops say

A woman was killed on Sunday, Nov. 6, when a deer crashed through both of her car’s windshields, according to local media reports.

The woman, a 63-year-old from southern New Jersey, was driving on a state highway in Franklin Township when a deer ran onto the road and crashed into her Kia Soul, according to NJ.com.

The animal smashed through the front windshield and exited through the rear of the car, according to the outlet.

Police arrived at the scene around 5 p.m. and found the vehicle, which had sustained severe damage, stopped on the side of the road, according to Patch.

The woman, identified as Karen Juliano, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the outlet. Her death was caused by the deer striking her during the crash.

The Franklin Township Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from McClatchy News.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, according to WCBS.

A second fatal crash involving a deer occurred in the state on the same day, according to the outlet. A 19-year-old swerving to avoid a deer on the road crashed into another car in Newtown.

More than 30,000 car accidents involving deer occur every year in New Jersey, according to the New Jersey Farm Bureau, which cited data from AAA.

American drivers filed nearly 2 million animal collision insurance claims between July 2021 and June 2022, according to State Farm.
