The ‘ranch that Converse built’ lands on the market in Colorado. No strings attached

A property that was built by one of the most famous footwear companies in the world has landed on the real estate market in Gypsum, Colorado, for $8.995 million.

Welcome to Anderson Camps Ranch, a lodge and former summer camp that was built in the 1920s by the Converse family — the family that created Converse sneakers.

“Located at the confluence of Sweetwater Creek and the Colorado River, the 165± deeded acre Anderson Camps Ranch is a landmark Eagle County river holding,” the listing on Hall and Hall said.

“This attractive and historic ranch possesses nearly 3/4 mile of private frontage on both banks of Sweetwater Creek and enjoys private Colorado River access. Here, one can walk out the back door and fish the ranch’s internal private waters or wade and float the Colorado River.”

The ranch is currently being used as a private family retreat, a news release about the property said.

The owner, D. Scott Stuart, would often go to the camp as a child and ended up buying the ranch in 1979, Mansion Global reported. It hasn’t been on the market in 45 years, according to the real estate news outlet.

The residence, per the listing, features:

  • Six-bedroom, four-bathroom primary residence with a pool

  • Two-bedroom, two-bathroom guest cabin

  • Two garages

  • Creek House with a gym

  • 3,600-square-foot lodge

  • Eight-bedroom, six-bathroom multipurpose building

  • Caretaker’s home

  • Bunkhouse-style cabins

  • Guest pool

  • Climbing wall

  • Amphitheater

  • Camp store

  • Private pond

  • Barn with corral

  • Pistol range

Even though the camp is no longer open, people whoformerly attended the ranch as children often come to reminisce.

“Every year, we still get people who come by regularly just to see the camp and relive their experience,” Tamara Stuart, Scott’s wife, told Mansion Global.

“Sometimes, they bring their kids. And every single one of them makes the same comment, ‘The camp still smells the same.’ I think it’s the sage.”

The listing is held by Cody Lujan and Jeff Buerger.

Gypsum is about a 65-mile drive north from Aspen.
