Editor’s note: A prior version of this story included an incorrect percentage for the number of yes votes Measure J received. The measure received 47% yes votes, far less than the 55% needed to pass.
County’s official tally for the March 3 presidential primary election was finalized Friday, according to a county news release.
With no candidate receiving a majority of votes, District 2 will head to a runoff between incumbent Lee Lor and former Merced City Councilmember Josh Pedrozo in November’s presidential election. Lor claimed 37.15% of votes over Pedrozo’s 29.61%.
District 1 Supervisor Rodrigo Espinoza held the tightest race, barely clinching his seat with 50.26% of the vote compared to challenger Sonia Alshami’s 48.48%.
District 4 incumbent Lloyd Pareira led a strong victory with 68.84% of votes over rival Mario Mendoza’s 30.44%.
Measure J failed to reach the necessary 55% of votes to pass, getting only 47% yes votes. The bond would have given Merced College a $247-million to renovate old buildings, build new ones and modernize career technical education programs.
Le Grand Union High School’s Measure R also fell short at 53.87%.
El Nido Elementary School’s measures P and Q had better luck, with both exceeding the needed 55%.
Each of the City of Merced’s measures K, L and M passed easily.
The City of Atwater’s Measure O needed 2/3 of votes to pass, but only reached 59.57%.
Merced County voter turnout totaled 43.33%, up slightly from the 2016 primary election’s 41.95%, the release said.
