Waffle listeria recall expands: More store brands, more from Publix, Walmart, others

Last week’s recall of frozen waffles on listeria concerns has been expanded, and now includes each chain in the United States’ top 10 grocery sellers, the store brands of 8 of the top 10 and frozen pancakes.

Among the new arrivals to this recall are the Albertsons and Albertsons-owned chains, Costco, Meijer, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans and Whole Foods Market. Even more waffles have been yanked from Walmart, Kroger and Kroger-owned chains, Food Lion, Publix, Giant, Giant Eagle, Target, H-E-B, Aldi, Dollar General and others.

All these retailers get their frozen waffles and pancakes from TreeHouse Foods, based in Oakbrook, Illinois, a town best known for being the corporate home of McDonald’s until 2018.

TreeHouse said company testing that found listeria at the manufacturing facility caused the original recall, made Oct. 18. TreeHouse’s FDA-posted release from Tuesday said, the “recall was expanded based on additional testing at the manufacturing facility.”

What frozen waffles and pancakes are recalled?

It’s not exaggeration to say it might be easier to list the chains and brands not affected by this recall.

Below we list stores and brands with recalled frozen waffles and pancakes, although keep in mind a name brand such as Kodiak can be in several stores. Also, each brand has several varieties that were recalled, but within those varieties, only some lot numbers and best-by dates. To check whether you have a box that fits those parameters, click here you bought your waffles in the United States or here if you bought your waffles in Canada.

Hannaford: Eponymous store brand and Nature’s Promise.

Harris Teeter: Eponymous store brand and Simple Truth. Among the name brands, Kodiak and Nature’s Path.

H-E-B: Eponymous store brand, Higher Harvest by H-E-B and Central Market by H-E-B.

Kroger: Eponymous store brand, Private Selection, Simple Truth and Simple Truth Organic. Among Kroger-owned chains are Ralphs, Metro Market, Baker’s, King Soopers, Dillons, Smith’s, Fry’s, City Market and Harris Teeter.

What’s listeria?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, listeria infects about 1,600 people in the United States each year. About 260 of those people die from the foodborne illness. it can cause pregnant women to suffer miscarriages and stillbirths. Adults over 65, children under 5 and anyone with a damaged immune system are the most vulnerable to the worst of listeria. Most people deal with fever, headaches, stomachaches, loss of balance and sometimes seizures.
