Cucumbers recalled in at least 26 states and Canada after links to salmonella ailments

A cucumber supplier recalled whole cucumbers that went to retail stores and restaurant suppliers across the nation after the FDA informed the company that there’s a link between the fruit and salmonella sicknesses.

Arizona-based SunFed Produce says some of the recalled cucumbers came from Agrotato S.A. de C.V., a grower based in Sonora, Mexico. The cucumbers come in cardboard containers bearing SunFed’s label or a white box or black plastic crate with Agrotato’s name on a sticker.

The cucumbers were sold from Oct. 12 through Nov. 26. And the salmonella sicknesses linked to the fruits, according to SunFed’s company-written, FDA-posted release, were from Oct. 12 through Nov. 15.

SunFed said their cucumbers and others from importers went to Florida, North Carolina, California, Texas, Missouri, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. They also went in Canada to Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

“The cucumbers would have reached consumers through foodservice and retail outlets that may be located in states other than those listed....,” SunFed said.

“As soon as we learned of this issue, we immediately acted to protect consumers,” SunFed President Craig Slate said. “We are working closely with authorities and the implicated ranch to determine the possible cause.”

If you have the cucumbers, you can return them for a refund or throw them in the trash. Questions about this recall can be directed to SunFed at 888-542-5849, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Eastern time.

Salmonella infects about 1.35 million people in the United States each year, the CDC says. Diarrhea, vomiting and stomachaches are the most common symptoms. Hospitalization is required in less than 1% of cases. Children under 5, adults over 65 and those with damaged immune systems are the most vulnerable to salmonella’s worst effects, including death.
