An advisory after listeria was found in vegetables sold under a Walmart store brand
Texas testing found listeria in broccoli sold under Walmart’s Marketside brand and the California manufacturer has issued a “precautionary advisory” of the broccoli, which went to 20 states.
This isn’t a recall of Marketside Broccoli Florets because that horse is out of the barn — the best by date was in December. The lot recalled shouldn’t still be on shelves, but might be in Walmart customers’ freezers.
Braga Farms’ FDA-posted release says, “The potential for contamination was discovered during random sampling by Texas Health & Human Services from a Texas store location where one of multiple samples yielded a positive test result.”
This covers 12-ounce bags with UPC code 6 81131 32884 5 from lot No. BFFG327A6 with a best by date of Dec. 10, 2024. All this information is on the bag. These bags went to California, Texas, Kentucky, Illinois, Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Walmart posted a list of stores that received the broccoli.
These bags should be tossed in the garbage or returned to Walmart for a full refund.
Listeria infects about 1,600 people in the United States each year, the CDC says, and kills about 260. It can cause stillbirths and miscarriages in pregnant women. Children under 5, adults over 65 and those with damaged immune systems usually get the worst of listeria. Most people deal with high fever, diarrhea, headaches, stomachaches and nausea and muscle stiffness.
Anyone with questions about this recall should email WeCare@bragafresh.com or call 877-456-7445, Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Eastern time.
