About 480,000 Anker power banks recalled after ‘fire and explosion incidents’

Power banks should power your phone or laptop, not burn your house. That’s why Anker Innovations recalled about 481,000 power banks over five models.

“The lithium-ion battery in the power bank can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers,” the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice explained.

And the recall notice said, Anker “has received 33 reports of fire and explosion incidents. Four minor burn injuries and one report of substantial property damage have been reported.”

Anker’s offering a refund in this recall of model Nos. A1647, A1652, A1257, A1681 and A1689. The company asks customers to go to Anker’s recall page, verify you have a recalled power bank and register for the recall. The refund can come in the form of a cash refund or Anker gift card.

“Recalled lithium-ion batteries must be disposed of differently than other batteries, because they present a greater risk of fire,” the recall notice warns. “Your municipal household hazardous waste collection center may accept this recalled lithium-ion battery or device for disposal. Before taking your battery or device to a HHW collection center, contact that office ahead of time and ask whether it accepts recalled lithium-ion batteries.”
