Alert for blood monitor sold by Walmart, Publix, others after injuries and death
After more than 11 years of injuries and a death, the manufacturer of blood glucose monitors has issued a correction to the instructions directing actions when the glucose might be dangerously high.
These True Metrix monitors are sold under the store brands of the nation’s largest pharmacies and grocers, including Walmart, Kroger, CVS, Walgreens, Publix and Albertsons.
Blood glucose monitoring systems made by Fort Lauderdale’s Trividia Health give an “E-5 Error” to warn of very high glucose.
“As currently written, the instructions could potentially lead to a delay in treatment if the user does not seek medical attention immediately when they receive an E-5 error code and are experiencing symptoms of high glucose,” Trividia’s website says. “A delay in treatment may result in serious adverse health consequences or death, especially for users with very high blood glucose levels.”
A Trividia spokesperson said Thursday the 114 serious injuries and one death by monitor users since 2014 were because “the instructions weren’t clear enough to seek medical attention immediately.”
The correction says, “WARNING!! Retest with a new test strip. If the error persists and you have symptoms such as fatigue, excess urination, thirst or blurry vision, seek medical attention immediately.”
This is not a request to return the monitors, as in a recall. Trividia said they can continue to be used.
This covers True Metrix, True Metrix Air, True Metrix Pro, and True Metrix Go monitors sold in the United States, the Caribbean, Mexico, the United Kingdom and Australia. They’re sold at the following stores under eponymous store brands (in alphabetical order):
CVS; Discount Drug Mart; Farmacias Benavides; H-E-B; Henry Schein; HyVee; Kroger; Meijer; Publix; Rite Aid; and Walgreens.
