Merced officials warn about cold temperatures this week. How to prepare
Merced County officials are warning residents about cold weather this week, with the lowest overnight temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service, Merced could see low temperatures as follows:
- 38 degrees on Tuesday night, with mostly cloudy skies.
- 37 degrees on Wednesday night, with partly cloudy skies.
- 39 degrees on Thursday night, with partly cloudy skies.
The Merced County Office of Emergency Services said residents should cover outside pipes and bring pets indoors or into a garage, according to a post on Facebook.
Anyone attending holiday events should make sure to “bundle up,” the post said.
High temperatures will be in the high 50s most of the week, except on Wednesday, which will see a high of 52 degrees.
There is a dense fog warning on Tuesday until 11 a.m., according to the NWS. Residents can expect more fog the rest of the week.
How to be prepared for the cold
Ready.gov, a government resource that helps people prepare for emergencies and natural disasters, also outlines tips on how to brace for the cold:
- Install and test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors
- Gather supplies in case of a power outage
- Avoid driving in dangerous conditions, if possible, and limit time outdoors.
- If you need to be outside, wear warm clothes and be aware of frostbite and hypothermia symptom
- Do not heat your home with a gas stove or oven, as there is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning
- Create an emergency supply kit for your home, car and workplace. It should include jumper cables, water, blankets, nonperishable foods and flashlights.
- Keep a full tank of gas.
