Wind is causing problems in Merced County. Here’s what to know
The National Weather Service early Thursday issued a wind advisory for Merced County through 7 p.m., and strong gusts are already causing damage.
The California Highway Patrol in Merced reported two major incidents as of 9:30 a.m.
The first was several downed power poles blocking the roadway at Snelling and La Paloma roads in Snelling. Drivers are asked to avoid the area as crews work to clear the scene.
PG&E is on the scene to deal with the power poles, the CHP said on X. PG&E estimates it’ll have the poles repaired no earlier than midnight. There’s a hard closure at Old Lake Road, CHP said.
Wind also knocked down a large tree at El Capitan Way and Pepper Street in Delhi. Phone communication lines are also down in the area, CHP said.
The NWS expected winds in the 25 mph range Thursday, with gusts up to 40 mph.
The NWS also issued a freeze watch, sub-freezing temperatures as low as 28 possible overnight. The freeze watch extends into Saturday.
“Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” the NWS said. “Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution. Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.”
More rain, windy and cold conditions are expected in Merced County area into the weekend.
