Merced County gets its first heat warning of 2026. How hot will it get?

It’s not yet officially spring, but Merced County has already received its first heat risk warning of 2026.

The Merced County Office of Emergency Services said Monday that temperatures could be near or exceed 85 degrees this weekend and announced the first minor heat risk warning of the year.

“With many kids’ sports starting up for the spring season, it’s a good reminder to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and take breaks in the shade when possible,” the MCOES said in a Facebook post.

Merced County has a 30% chance of hitting 85 degrees or higher on Saturday. It has a 55% chance on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures the rest of the week should be in the mid- to high 70s, the NWS says.

Ways to stay safe in the heat according to the NWS

  • Stay hydrated: Remember to drink plenty of fluids.
  • Find cool shelter: Stay in an air-conditioned room.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure: Protect yourself and check on vulnerable relatives and neighbors.
  • Child and pet safety: Never leave young children and pets unattended in hot vehicles — car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
  • Be cautious outdoors: Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
  • Time your activities wisely: If possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening when the heat is less intense.
  • Recognize early indicators: Learn to identify the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Stay cool with clothing: Select lightweight and loose-fitting outfits for enhanced comfort.
