Merced County is under a heat advisory. Here’s what to expect

weather update

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Merced County and other Central Valley areas due to scorching temperatures expected for Monday and Tuesday.

The advisory lasts from 11 a.m. on Monday to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Temperatures will jump from a high of 91 degrees on Saturday to a high of 101 on Monday. Tuesday’s high is expected to be 100 degrees, the NWS said.

Merced County Office of Emergency Services issued a warning on Facebook to those who may want to head to the water to cool off.

“Temperatures will be warming up this weekend, but our lakes, rivers, and streams are still dangerously cold from recent snowmelt,” the post said.

It provided some tips to stay safe:

  • Always wear a life vest
  • Always bring a life preserver with you
  • Stay out of closed rivers, streams, and lakes
  • Never underestimate cold water conditions

Hot temperatures and high humidity can cause heat illnesses. The NWS shared these recommendations in its heat advisory:

  • Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
  • Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911.
