On Tuesday at 1:29 p.m. a heat advisory was released by the NWS San Francisco CA valid for Thursday between noon and 11 p.m. The advisory is for Sonoma Coastal Range, North Bay Interior Mountains, North Bay Interior Valleys, San Francisco Bay Shoreline, East Bay Interior Valleys, Santa Clara Valley Including San Jose, Eastern Santa Clara Hills and East Bay Hills.
The NWS informs, "High temperatures between 90 and 103 degrees for interior valleys and higher elevations. High temperatures between 85 and 96 degrees for the Bay Shoreline."
"This level of heat affects most individuals sensitive to heat, especially those without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration. Impacts possible in some health systems and in heat-sensitive industries," says the NWS.
This advisory is in effect until Thursday at 11 p.m.
Ways to stay safe in the heat according to the NWS
- Consume plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
- Seek shelter: Stay indoors in an air-conditioned room to keep cool.
- Stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
- Child and pet safety: Never leave young children and pets unattended in hot vehicles - car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
- Be mindful outdoors: Take extra precautions when working or spending time outside.
- Time your activities wisely: If possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening when the heat is less intense.
- Recognize early indicators: Learn to identify the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Stay cool with clothing: Select lightweight and loose-fitting outfits for enhanced comfort.
To ensure safety during outdoor work, adhere to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)'s recommendations by incorporating regular rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. If someone is affected by heat, immediately transfer them to a cool and shaded area. In an emergency, call 911.
