Abigail Nuno: If you want more jobs, then Merced must grow

Re “Revised jobless numbers climb ... but January figure still better than 2014” (Page A1, March 11): Can we all just accept that Merced is no longer a small city? Merced is expanding, but not growing. Merced County needs to see the underemployment rate decrease. A solution to the problem detailed in reporter Thaddeus Miller’s article is to create more job opportunities for people. Imagine seeing Merced grow. This will create job opportunities, which will make more people work and make money for the city. Not only will the employees make money, but it will also help the city of Merced.

Having Merced grow is the solution. This county is expanding already but none of the businesses are growing with it. UC Merced students are in need for work, the pregnancy rate is booming, and a new high school was recently built – proof that this city is growing and should be making moves on job opportunities. For example, chain restaurants, bigger retail stores or a bigger mall could all provide more job opportunities.
