Hannelore Rose: Encourage non-native speakers to learn English like I did

Re “County criticized for not providing interpreters” (Front page, July 12): I came to this country as a war-bride not knowing the English language, but I knew I wanted to become an American citizen. I educated myself in the English language, studied the US Constitution and within three years, I became an American citizen. To become a citizen of this country, do you not have to understand the English language? Now to request interpreters for non-English speaking residents and expect the taxpayers to pay when they want to take part in the county affairs. So, instead of expecting taxpayers paying for interpreters, maybe Ms. Delgado should be encouraging these people to learn our language instead of keeping them handicapped. Ms. Delgado also stated they helped to elect our supervisor and how was that possible, if they do not speak or understand English? To my Supervisor, Mr. McDaniel, I suggest that he should occupy himself with serving his constituents that voted him in, rather then finding interpreters for non-citizens. It is not his job!
