David J. Silva: What watery planet do environmentalists live on?

Re “Comment urged on dam plans” (Page A2, May 14), a well written article in the Merced Sun-Star recently about the renewal of the license for the New Exchequer Dam. It seems that in exchange for granting the license, they want Merced Irrigation District to release an additional 47,000 acre feet of water for steelhead trout. The problem is that there hasn’t been a steelhead seen or caught in the river in 20 years.

That water would irrigate 12,000 acres of farm land, creating jobs and providing a lot of food and income. A large majority of environmentalists are city dwellers who haven’t got the vaguest idea of what it takes to produce food.

If you are in agriculture, or a related business, you will wonder what planet are these people are from. They are one of the main reasons so many more businesses and jobs are leaving California than are coming in. The Environmental Protection Agency gets its power from the politicians, mainly from Jerry Brown and the liberals. We are lucky to be represented by Assemblyman Adam Gray, who puts us above party politics. Make sure to vote for people whose main concern is people and not nonexistent fish.
