Tim Simmons: When it comes to sports, call it the “Some-Star”

I opened June 1 Merced Sun-Star sports page to find out about the NHL playoffs. I read the sports page twice, no hockey news. A sports page? I don’t think so. Half the front sports page was NASCAR’s Jimmy Johnson wins again (ho hum), congrats to the Giants for the 25-0 streak. Big articles about LeBron, a 92-year-old runner, baseball in a different country, soccer and grass. But not one word about the NHL playoffs. An accruate local high school sports schedule and daily column would help local high school sports attendance.

The Stanley Cup started June 3. The sports page-and-a-half had how to pack for camping, some FIFA guy retiring and a basketball concussion. Not one word about the Stanley Cup Finals. Adam Blauert’s column is great, but most campers can figure out what to take. Hockey is a sport. Give the Sun-Star a sports page, or forever hold my subscription to the “Some Star.”
