Dave Contreras: Researching Valley’s Latino baseball heritage
The Mexican American community of Merced has the honor of a visit from author Richard Santillan, Professor Emeritus from Cal Poly, Pomona.
Prof. Santillan has dedicated much of his time researching Latino baseball history in Southern California and other regions of the western U.S. He has written several books on the subject of Latino baseball, circa WWII. He would like to add the Merced region and parts of Northern California to his next book.
On June 18-19, at Club Mercedes (569 W. Ninth St.) starting at 9:30 a.m., he will collect copies of photographs of old ball teams, men’s and women’s softball teams as well as listening to stories pertaining to the photos. He is also interested in photos of old ballparks and anything pertaining to the Latino families’ heritage and accomplishments in the prewar era through 1970s.
Anyone who would like to contribute photos and stories are welcome to attend. For more information or to schedule a time to meet, call (209) 761-4258.
