John K. Wheeler: Plenty of excuses, but no help repairing sidewalks

Re “Ditch lawns from sidewalk to curb” (Letters, June 16): This letter to the editor shed some light on a real problem in Merced. Recently I called the tree deptartment about a broken sidewalk caused by tree roots lifting a section several inches higher than the rest of the sidewalk. The admited the tree caused the damage, but was not concerned as long as the tree is healthy. Another city employee from the sidewalk deptartment said, yes it may be a danger, but he can’t fix it until he gets more money. Their supervisor said, yes, the tree is causing the damage and it might be dangerous, so he will put it on a list of future repairs after he gets more money.

In the meantime, the lady with the walker will continue to go out into the street to bypass that area she can’t get over. The toddlers who keep tripping will continue to fall and cry.
