Florence Lambert: Making it easy to adopt a new family member

June is national “Adopt a Shelter Cat Month.” An animal lover, such as myself, doesn’t understand why every month isn’t “Adopt a Shelter Cat or Dog” month. Recently I was told, regarding a new TV that no longer worked, to “throw it away and get another one.” These newer items were never meant to sustain a long life or to be fixed. Unfortunately, it seems this outlook applies to animals now.

Being a volunteer for the Merced SPCA I could tell you stories that you would find hard to believe. It’s a sad story that needs to be told over and over again, just not here. “Here” is about hoping the good people who read this make the decision to bring another pet or a first pet into their homes as a family member, not a disposable TV.

Please come to the SPCA and look at our wonderful, loving cats and kittens. All cats are spay/neutered, have their first round of vaccinations (same with dogs) and you get a month of free medical insurance – a huge savings. In recognition of adoption month, we are reducing our fees by 50 percent on adult cats.
