Ralph S. Temple Jr. and Brian D. Morse: Golfers will miss the ‘Jewel of the Valley’
The Kelley family threw a great party on July 18 at Stevinson Ranch. Golfers filled the course, then great food and music followed. Sadly, it was all to mark the close of a wonderful golf course; truly the jewel of the Valley.
Economics and our water shortage forced the closure of the course, which was always beautifully maintained with superb putting surfaces. The course featured a delectable variety of holes designed by the late John Harbottle and co-owner George Kelley.
George, a former professional golfer, is a great steward of golf. Stevinson hosted countless qualifying events for the United States Golf Association and Northern California Golf Association, and collegiate competition among Division I teams from all over the country. George welcomed local high schools and collegiate golf teams, who enjoyed the state-of-the-art practice facility. First Tee and NCGA Youth on Course participants learned the game in ideal surroundings.
The Kelleys provided us with 20 years of wonderful experiences and memories.
