Karen Marino: Many ways to help the SPCA

Re “Cost of repairs has SPCA scrambling” (Page A4, July 17): It was shocking to read the Merced SPCA is experiencing such problems. Let’s see, Merced population over 80,000, SPCA dues are $35 per year. So if even 4,000 of those 80,000 joined for even one year (and it’s tax deductible), the SPCA would have $140,000. Hmmmm.

OK, let’s see: Atwater police officer Lt. Sam Joseph says shelters help immensely with the care of animals and to defray costs from taxpayers. Hmmmm.

OK, let’s see: Merced has several roofing companies and plumbing/septic companies. Hmmmm. Other than being a good Samaritan, wouldn’t this look great for your business to help an organization like the SPCA and possibly take a sweet tax writeoff?
