Pat Trieweiler: Debt is a huge problem that must be addressed

The national debt is now over $18.3 trillion. Our D.C. politicians will reassure you that our debt is not nearly as bad as the Greek debt. They will argue our economy is much bigger than theirs, and, unlike Greece, our debt is sustainable and manageable.

I beg to differ. Debt has the same look and odor to it whether it’s in Barstow or Athens. It’s caused by the same parasite called “pork-barrell spending.”

I realize our country is consumed by transgender stories and deflated football scandals, but the national debt is a huge problem and needs to be addressed. It is unfortunate our Washington leadership doesn’t have the backbone to address the debt and has the gall to willingly pass it on to future generations. Every time budget issues are addressed, they get kicked down the road. I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Pat Trieweiler, Atwater
