Bob Plass: Iran deal offers best path to peaceful middle east

After years spent on the brink of war with Iran, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is a chance for lasting peace.

1. It drastically shrinks Iran’s nuclear program.

2. Inspectors will have the access they need. Inspectors have 24/7 access to Iran’s nuclear facilities; Iran also has to grant inspectors access to other suspicious sites within a maximum of 24 days, if the U.S. and Europeans demand it.

3. The plan is only about the nuclear program in Iran. The U.S. and others can begin to diplomatically address Iran’s human rights abuses and the imprisoned U.S. citizens there. It keeps sanctions against Iranian support for terrorism.

4. If Congress rejects the plan, there will be no new inspections, restrictions or verifications that this plan provides. Iran would have no incentive to scale back its nuclear program. The risk that the U.S. and/or Israel would eventually attack Iran’s nuclear program, leading to full-fledged war is increased.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is the best path to peace.
