Martin G. Hansen: Think globally, act locally to solve problems

We live on (just) this one planet, you and I, are in Merced County most of the time, so it is ours to take care of – like it or not – in the spirit of “brighten the corner where you are.” I encourage everyone to try to use your brain more; think for yourself then act, rather than just complain. For example, if an able-bodied man sees a shopping cart in a creek, he could put his boots on to go retrieve it. Collect them all. If the store won’t pay for their return, take them to a recycling place for money for scrap.

I’m urging people to start thinking of ways to improve our collective situation, whether or not you believe and accept “climate change.” If all residents only put out their gray garbage cans to be picked up when two-thirds of three-quarters full, the amount of gas and energy (fewer stops for the trucks) saved could really have an impact on our immediate environment through less pollution.

Also, try to stop asking God for so much help; instead, be thankful that you have a brain and the ability to reason and think creatively for yourself.
