Theron Sanders Sr.: The Bus throws Taxi-Script riders ‘under the bus’

Once again, seniors and persons with disabilities are being thrown under the bus – by The Bus. As if the current Merced County Systems operations are not bad enough, with “no warning” I learned today that The Bus has discontinued its Atwater-Winton areas Taxi-Script Program. A driver informed me she also found out as she started her shift that day.

Several weeks prior, I read in the newspaper that someone had addressed legitimate issues with the operation of the transit system. The Taxi-Script program is a major lifesaver for me, many other senior citizens and other ADA riders. With Taxi-Script we can go to doctor’s appointments, do shopping and many other things that are prohibited on a bus.

The Bus is no longer friendly for the disabled; there are no shelters and the stops are too far apart. There is no more curb-side pick-up even in rural communities. Please save this program! It’s also our lifeline, and is the best extension of The Bus.

Theron Sanders Sr., Atwater
