Mary Wentz: Setting record straight for Lunney

Re “Warnke is right for top cop job” (Letters, Oct. 22): The writer was correct in saying Pat Lunney is employed by one of the very best attorneys in town (District Attorney Larry Morse). But I can assure you Sherrif Pat Lunney would not be indebted to anyone he has worked for or anyone who has supported him during in the election. He is an honest and upstanding person, just as is Vern Warnke.

Concerning your comment about Pat’s three retirements. Let me inform you of the truth. Merced police department and the California Department Of Justice retirement contributions both go to the Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). That means Pat, who served as chief of police in Merced and director of Law Enforcement with the DOJ, gets only one retirement from PERS. When he retires from Merced County, he will get another retirement. That is two – exactly like many other public employees who came from the military and other jobs after their first retirements. Do your homework!

Vote for the only man with more experience in his career than a shift supervisor. Vote Pat Lunney for Sheriff.

Mary Wentz, Merced
